Lua Hurts Everybody on Sullivan Street (DGeA)

An audio overlay of contemporary songs sharing similar key and chord structure.

This audio piece consists of three contemporary songs with verses oscillating between D major and G major with a chorus primarily built on E minor and A major. Each plays on its own unaltered timeline allowing the composition as a whole to shift in and out of phase with itself. Of particular interest are the moments when the vocalists offer an unintended call-and-response. For example, the end of the swell around 4:10 where Adam Duritz is calling out “I’m down on my knees” as Michael Stipe further clarifies with “sometimes.” Composed from the following songs:

Bright Eyes
Lua
I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning (2005)

REM
Everybody Hurts
Automatic for the People (1992)

Counting Crows
Sullivan Street
August and Everything After (1993)

Released December 2008.
